Lauren Boilini Henry Cowdery

Closing reception: Saturday February 8th 6-9 pm

UNDERBELLY is an immersive impression of a whale fall. When a whale dies and falls to the floor of the ocean, it creates a complex ecosystem that can provide sustenance for deep-sea organisms for decades. Similar to the nurse logs we find in the Northwest, this occurrence creates life after death. As artists, we are both interested in the cycles joining life and death. Cowdery’s work investigates the role of time in the natural world and Boilini’s looks at violence and death, both the man-made and the natural.

Seattle narrative artist Jane Hickey Caminos“On Women Bound” – a one woman show of thought provoking activist paintings. “The intent of ‘On Women Bound’ is to increase awareness of crimes against the female gender, be they a culture away or an incidence of domestic violence in a nearby couple’s kitchen. I understand that as an artist, I have a responsibility to use my gift to help these millions of traumatized women. I want the paintings to generate a dialogue that will be carried from the exhibition out to others.” Turning victims into the victorious -Jane Hickey Caminos, Activist Artist

Gina Siciliano presents I Know What I Am: The Life and Times of Artemisia Gentileschi. In her debut graphic novel, Gina Siciliano brings to life the tumultuous 17th-century cities of Rome, Florence, Naples, and Venice where the fearless Artemisia Gentileschi braved the male-dominated sphere of painting to become a groundbreaking artist. I Know What I Am paints a complex, feminist portrait of Artemisia as a single mother, a sexual assault survivor, and a pioneering practitioner of her craft. The event features an exhibition of Siciliano’s original art, sketches, research material, and related ephemera.

On view through November 5. Opening reception Saturday, October 12, 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Artist talk at 7:00 PM.

And the Language Was Beauty : New paintings and collage by Gillian Theobald

October 3 – November 16, 2019

Opening Reception Oct. 12th 6-9pm

A true master of both drawing and color, Theobald further develops her painting series, Fictive Landscapes, in this body of work titled “And the Language Was Beauty.” Her abstracted landscapes situate radiant notes of color in combinations and contrasts that invite the viewer to bask in their invigorating atmosphere. Her vivacious signature collages, made from found packaging and acrylic manipulated into a shallow bas relief space, likewise emphasize color and texture in layers that suggest a playful exploration of space. Both on view at studio e through November 16th.
