Emily Gherard: We Have Always Been Broken. March 14 6-9pm

We Have Always Been Broken features a selection of recent plaster works. These works were made by pouring wet plaster into molds constructed of intaglio printing plates. The result is a contradictory form that has the delicate rich marks of an intaglio print but the weight and solidity of a plaster block. These large wall sculptures are made up of multiple individually printed blocks that assemble to form larger structures. The boat-like piece Precious and Vulnerable is made out of 30 shaped printed plaster blocks with an embedded cedar wood structure that stains the plaster. The result is a form that slopes downward, sinking into the ground. A feeling of instability is created by its off-balance composition and top-heavy form.

Unsettled Waters: Heather Wilcoxon

A sense of quest imbues Wilcoxon’s abstract works. Her mixed media pieces confront the viewer with seemingly recognizable objects made of thick lines in abstract color fields. Original Art: Daniel Clowes turns the spotlight on one of the medium’s most dynamic creators. A vital entry of the Fantagraphics Studio Edition series, this volume draws from Clowes’s nearly 30 years of comics art, ranging from his seminal one-man anthology, Eightball (in which Ghost World was originally serialized), to his most recent graphic novel, 2016’s best-selling time travel thriller, Patience.

UNDERBELLY

Lauren Boilini Henry Cowdery

Closing reception: Saturday February 8th 6-9 pm

UNDERBELLY is an immersive impression of a whale fall. When a whale dies and falls to the floor of the ocean, it creates a complex ecosystem that can provide sustenance for deep-sea organisms for decades. Similar to the nurse logs we find in the Northwest, this occurrence creates life after death. As artists, we are both interested in the cycles joining life and death. Cowdery’s work investigates the role of time in the natural world and Boilini’s looks at violence and death, both the man-made and the natural.

Neighborhood Arts Collective

Fundraiser event December 14 6-9pm

Works on view December 9-14 hours TBD

More about the organization:

We create art that is based on the lives of our neighbors. We do not have a one-size-fits-all approach to this, but we do follow a general process. First, we interview a subject “neighbor”, possibly multiple times, and try to get an accurate sense of what their life is like. We then sit down as a team and discuss the ideas and themes that stand out to us from those interviews. Each artist in the collective spends time developing their own ideas regarding what their contribution will be, and we discuss what media will best portray that neighbor and their life. Then we spend time (weeks, and possibly months) creating art, often with the subject neighbor’s input based on the ideas that have come out of this process of getting to know them better. What you see/read/hear is the product of that process of getting to know one of our neighbors.

This project came together out of a desire to know more about one another. To knock on the door of the people surrounding us and make tangible connections again. Neighborhood Arts Collective was created out of need, something we felt was necessary and important in a nation torn apart by differences and fear. What’s missing? Empathy.

The resulting works showcase the artist’s signature iconography including exquisite weeds, “big dumb boots,”, potted shrubbery, flaming wigs, floating scaffolding, and mysterious silhouetted figures achieved by digital manipulation of a hand-drawn form and shape, further reworked by traditional painting and drawing techniques.
