I understand that as an artist, I have a responsibility to use my gift to help these millions of traumatized women. I want the paintings to generate a dialogue that will be carried from the exhibition out to others.” Turning victims into the victorious -Jane Hickey Caminos, Activist Artist

Neighborhood Arts Collective

Fundraiser event December 14 6-9pm

Works on view December 9-14 hours TBD

More about the organization:

We create art that is based on the lives of our neighbors. We do not have a one-size-fits-all approach to this, but we do follow a general process. First, we interview a subject “neighbor”, possibly multiple times, and try to get an accurate sense of what their life is like. We then sit down as a team and discuss the ideas and themes that stand out to us from those interviews. Each artist in the collective spends time developing their own ideas regarding what their contribution will be, and we discuss what media will best portray that neighbor and their life. Then we spend time (weeks, and possibly months) creating art, often with the subject neighbor’s input based on the ideas that have come out of this process of getting to know them better. What you see/read/hear is the product of that process of getting to know one of our neighbors.

This project came together out of a desire to know more about one another. To knock on the door of the people surrounding us and make tangible connections again. Neighborhood Arts Collective was created out of need, something we felt was necessary and important in a nation torn apart by differences and fear. What’s missing? Empathy.

Glaubitz will exhibit recent watercolor works related to the book. This event will also introduce a Starseeds-branded hot sauce from HOSA, a Bellingham-based boutique condiment company co-founded by Fantagraphics art director Jacob Covey. Prairie Underground Presents Nancy Jones. This series of watercolors references our human need for meaning using configured codes both familiar and new, creating complex moods with dialects of representational scenes with overlaid motifs and auratic light. The logos, more arbitrary and simplified appear to be the connecting narrative between the figures, detached and distant, allowing a space for reflection, while auratic light works with semblance.

Polaris is an immersive experience by Chanee Choi, incorporating neon, sculpture, video games, wearable tech, embroidery and movement.  The work is inspired by starlight and our existence in the universe. Choi proposes that each of us has a signal within us that we can use to communicate with other worlds.  Our signal connects us to the universe, and could be something we can see, feel, or touch. Choi creates a space for us discover the signal within through interactive video installations, and many interactive sources of light – LED, neon, and video projection. Like footsteps echoing in a cave, your movement through Polaris will be echoed in the light as it reacts to your presence. There are 2 butoh performances for the show. The first one is in the opening reception on 4/13, and 4/19. Two performers wear LED costumes that interact with their movement.

Jellyfish BrewingJellyfish Brewing and Bruno B Art Collectif present Kate Tesch. Using gravity as an applicator, Kate builds layers upon layers of paint drips, producing a face-melting array of texture and color that defy traditional two-dimensional art form.

Dawn Cerny and Damien Hoar de Galvan share an aesthetic that is both formaland reductive while maintaining a sense of fun and curiosity.  Both artists offer objects that allow us to contemplate their function, texture, and relation to the human body. Also, when shown together, they address issues of usefulness and create a tension of belief albeit fragile.” -Robert Yoder.

The Shed  Part II: BEASTS (THE LAST DREAM OF THE BEAST) , the art of Christopher Petersen durational performance installation, April 13 , 6:30-8:30 PM…a theatrical work… an electronic media drama in which both music and images will be visceral, clearly articulated, forceful and at times violent. THE BEAST (a creature caught between man and beast) believes a poetic theory that if one dies while dreaming, that dream becomes infinite. He fantasizes a beautiful ‘beast woman’ who, blind and armless, falls in love with him. The ending aria is their final love moment in which he dies in his sleep. Her ending lullaby acknowledges both the death and the eternal dream.
