Prairie Underground These Days-1999-Untill-Forever, Doug Newman

“I arrived in Seattle in 1999 and started taking pictures right away of my friends, my lover Jason, my community. Now looking back, these informal moments marked my life. So informal then, visual history locked in time and place now. Some of us grew up, some of us moved in, some gone. 15 years of C-Print color photographs will be pulled to build this memory of ‘These Days-1999-Untill-Forever'”. – Doug(las) P. Newman

Oxbow  presents I am the Shadow of the Image of my person. Through a large-scale interactive sound and video installation, artist-composers James Borchers and Jeremy Jolley explore questions about identity and representation in the age of advanced technology.  Infrared sensors, multichannel speakers, and software generate an interactive experience featuring video projections of performing musicians from the Seattle Modern Orchestra. As visitors move through the space, the images and sounds are altered.  Visitors can enter a small dodechahedron-shaped room to immerse themselves in an audio-video collage of those same players. There will also be a live concert with the musicians, in dialog with the installation. Through its presentation of altering human forms playing their instruments, the piece becomes part performance and part digital play, invoking both dialogic and meditative experience, and calling into question what we know to be real.

Opening Reception May 4, 7pm. Open during Art Attack May 12, 6-9pm. Performance by Seattle Modern Orchestra May 26, 7pm.

Bridge Productions  presents KAT LARSON, THE GHOST FROM VEGA. Opening reception 10 DECEMBER. Interdisciplinary artist and performer Kat Larson creates hauntingly beautiful video paintings addressing themes of identity, race, and femininity. In Larson’s new series of photographs and video, The Ghost from Vega, she tells the story of a being from another planet who crash lands on Earth and, over time, becomes a ghost with no means to return home. Intrigued by our world, the visitor begins to explore it only to find their strength weakened by the deficit of love and compassion, and begins to slowly fade away. Over time, they become a ghost with no means to return home.  This intimate, tender story serves as a parable to the power of connection, perseverance, and strength of the spirit.

Krab Jab Studios  In times of uncertainty, fear and turmoil, there is work to do, that only can be achieved when operating together. “Standing Rock” is not just another “event” that will quickly pass by but rather the embodiment and expression of our zeitgeist: the spirit in time not only in Dakota or the United States, but globally. Polarization and disintegration is happening all around us. The suffering as seen clearly and again with the Sioux and their direct supporters, is an evident result of authoritie’s ignorance, marginalization and discrimination. Our work and social responsibility is to bring together, to connect, to listen, to communicate and to act where we can. We have already all it takes to change, if we just allow it to happen. Any step towards the great, is a solid step!
