Feelings . Artist in residence Matthew Offenbacher will host training for anyone interested in learning basic bystander intervention techniques to use when you see someone being harassed. During his residency, Offenbacher will also present dance performance, a work in progress that uses a body of paintings as both score and scenery to think about the link between ancient Greek iconography and supremacist ideologies, the strangeness of whiteness and maleness to the accompaniment of classic rock.

John Muir Elementary, part of Seattle Public Schools, is a culturally rich school located in the Rainier Valley.  As a Title 1 school with limited resources, visual arts and our creative expressions act as a connector to address the inequities to create social change – internally and externally. With some background of the harmful effects of fast fashion, students only worked with remnants and a variety of fabrics and textiles donated by Prairie Underground.

Isaac Quigley, a Seattle-based artist whose acrylic paintings incorporate found objects, craft supplies, studio refuse, and heavy layers of collage. Though sculptural, drawing and form are essential, his process relies on an intuitive spontaneity that creates a messy and raw aesthetic. He uses materials to flesh-out a variety of landscapes and biological processes to help describe our relationship to our environment.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery  Please join us on Saturday, April 13 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for an exhibition of watercolors and drawings by Mexican multimedia artist Charles Glaubitz as he launches the second volume of his metaphysical graphic novel Starseeds . Also appearing is award-winning cartoonist and illustrator Leela Corman, co-founder of Sequential Artists Workshop in Gainesville, Florida. Glaubitz’s Starseeds emerged from a series of narrative paintings on modern mythology. His subsequent graphic novel is informed by sources such as Joseph Campbell, Jack Kirby, Robert Anton Wilson, and the Mayan Aztec Codex – a fascinating and fluid meditation on the human condition. Glaubitz will exhibit recent watercolor works related to the book. This event will also introduce a Starseeds-branded hot sauce from HOSA, a Bellingham-based boutique condiment company co-founded by Fantagraphics art director Jacob Covey. New York artist Leela Corman returns to Seattle in advance of the Trailer Blaze women artists retreat sponsored by Short Run. She’ll sign copies of her acclaimed graphic novel Unterzakhn and the recent short story collection We All Wish for Deadly Force.

Prairie Underground Presents Nancy Jones. This series of watercolors references our human need for meaning using configured codes both familiar and new, creating complex moods with dialects of representational scenes with overlaid motifs and auratic light. The logos, more arbitrary and simplified appear to be the connecting narrative between the figures, detached and distant, allowing a space for reflection, while auratic light works with semblance.

 

Oxbow Presents Polaris by Chanee Choi.   Artist reception 6-8 pm, Public performance 7:00 PM. Gallery hours 4/18-4/27 Thursday-Saturday 5-8 pm

Polaris is an immersive experience by Chanee Choi, incorporating neon, sculpture, video games, wearable tech, embroidery and movement.  The work is inspired by starlight and our existence in the universe. Choi proposes that each of us has a signal within us that we can use to communicate with other worlds.  Our signal connects us to the universe, and could be something we can see, feel, or touch. Choi creates a space for us discover the signal within through interactive video installations, and many interactive sources of light – LED, neon, and video projection. Like footsteps echoing in a cave, your movement through Polaris will be echoed in the light as it reacts to your presence. There are 2 butoh performances for the show. The first one is in the opening reception on 4/13, and 4/19. Two performers wear LED costumes that interact with their movement.

Jellyfish BrewingJellyfish Brewing and Bruno B Art Collectif present Kate Tesch. Using gravity as an applicator, Kate builds layers upon layers of paint drips, producing a face-melting array of texture and color that defy traditional two-dimensional art form.

The Shed  Part II: BEASTS (THE LAST DREAM OF THE BEAST) , the art of Christopher Petersen durational performance installation, April 13 , 6:30-8:30 PM…a theatrical work… an electronic media drama in which both music and images will be visceral, clearly articulated, forceful and at times violent. THE BEAST (a creature caught between man and beast) believes a poetic theory that if one dies while dreaming, that dream becomes infinite. He fantasizes a beautiful ‘beast woman’ who, blind and armless, falls in love with him. The ending aria is their final love moment in which he dies in his sleep. Her ending lullaby acknowledges both the death and the eternal dream.

Georgetown Arts and Cultural Center  presents ” When you let the light in” a solo show of new oil painting and mixed media by Angielena Chamberlain. These new works focus on navigating the process of reckless and complicated love. Sometimes healing is laughter, sometimes tears and often times misunderstood by those around us.  This is a playful look at how the artist decided to let healing happen in her own life. Open studios also include The Scarlet Crow is the business name of Karen , a gifted medium, and communicator of the Spirit Realm.  Karen specializes in Bone Casting. This can give clarity to what is happening in your life, and help determine if you are on your right path. Karen has a sarcastic wit, and is Not your mama’s medium.

The Palace Theater and Art Bar  Where local artists sell their art. Featuring artist Chris Schanz this month. You would need to travel out into the nightlife of Seattle to see Seattle photographer Chris Schanz in action, crawling on the floor through broken glass and rhinestones alike to photograph your favorite drag performance. Perhaps you’ve seen him patrolling junkyards of central Washington State looking for that perfect rusted hulk. Maybe that was him crouched down at the front of the mosh pit trying to get that ONE photo of the guitarist making “that face”. Here is your opportunity to see his new collection of “Altered States” in small format mixed media, as well as a few selections from previous exhibits in person! BOPBOX presents the works of artist Melissa Llamas.  Her series of paintings is comprised of Abstractive Layers-Landscapes and Seascapes, using different mediums of watercolor, acrylic, gouache and pencil. Elysian Brewing Tap Room is hosting Ink , an artist hailing from Maine. Her career began with painting graffiti on walls, under bridges, and on abandoned buildings. Through her love of hip hop, her creative mind erupted and inspired her to follow her true calling. Ink captures environmental dilemmas, beauty, humor, everyday life, and emotions to help people see life from her perspective.

Fogue Studios & Gallery  Live Music! Featuring  Fougue Studios musician Andrew Sherbrook‘s acoustic guitar flow music. Tom Gormally‘s immersive sculpture exhibition, Fox in the Hen House . “Fox News has done more to divide this country than anybody in the last 50 years. HIGHLIGHTS:

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery   Jack Kamen‘s classic stories in comics like Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science, Haunt of Fear, and Weird Fantasy left a lasting impression on mid-century American youth. They sold in the millions, but were vilified by preachers and politicians, who claimed these comic books were the cause of juvenile delinquency and crime, leading to their ultimate demise. Kamen’s legacy has been preserved in the EC Artists’ Library from Fantagraphics Books. An exhibition of Kamen’s comics hosted by series editor J. Michael Catron opens Saturday, February 9 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

All City Coffee  presents Happening . Happening is a collection of information about arts-focused community projects coming to Georgetown in 2019 meant to inform the public about these projects and invite participation and feedback. Don’t forget to pin the map with places you find arts & culture! Fogue Studios & Gallery   Solo exhibition featuring Fox in the Hen House, sculptures by Tom Gormally “Over the past two years, I have created a series of sculptures, as I process the bizarre and disturbing stories that are a part of world news today”.- Tom Gormally. In Gormally’s Fox series, he approaches ongoing political and cultural turmoil how he imagines a shaman would deal with these disturbances; by creating effigies to dispel the negative influence affecting our culture.

studio e   Green Fuse : Sarah Norsworthy Immerse yourself in the Pacific Northwest forest through the artwork of Sarah Norsworthy. studio e is delighted to present our first solo exhibition of Norsworthys’ paintings, ranging from expansive panels, to delicate inks on paper, to multi-panel composites grafted together. Few artists capture the dense, organic atmosphere of the forest as tactilely as Norsworthy, whose paintings exude the scent of moss and humus. Often adopting the woods themselves as her studio, Norsworthy soaks up their essence and transfers the experience to her panels. studio e   Warren Dykeman continues to “hunt for the right kind of wrong” as he merges folk art, Neo-primitive, graphic art, and typography in his latest mixed-media collaged paintings. In Attention Span , his second solo exhibition with studio e, and following his recent show at Volta NY, Dykeman has found an original way to bring digital designing tools into his artwork, and juxtapose those with the physical and abusive handling of his pieces. The resulting works showcase the artist’s signature iconography including exquisite weeds, “big dumb boots,”, potted shrubbery, flaming wigs, floating scaffolding, and mysterious silhouetted figures achieved by digital manipulation of a hand-drawn form and shape, further reworked by traditional painting and drawing techniques.

The Alice Gallery Is exhibiting artists Jeanne Medina and Sara Jimenez thru November 17. Jeanne Medina works between textile, fashion, and performance. Medina considers her textile production as a process of decolonization through which she grapples with identity, ancestral trauma, and the fixed and fluid spaces of the body. She is interested in the language, meaning, and knowledge embodied in textiles which have been devalued by colonial hierarchies over time. Sara Jimenez is a Filipina-Canadian interdisciplinary artist. Sudden Lull, Terrific Gale, Dead Calm presented in the Project Diana Space is a recent compilation of performative photos. This exhibition embodies the character of Urduja, a pre-colonial warrior princess and Jimenez’s intuitive responses to  the landscape, exploring vulnerability, weight, and trauma.

By assembling and connecting objects, images or materials into unexpected ways they radiate and evoke their own essence,Her works are frequently on the margin of dreamlike universes with bridges to the natural world as passages. Many of her distinctive ‘creatures’ are created with mixed elements from both worlds.

Bridge Productions For our October exhibition, Bridge Productions is pleased to present Seattle-based printmaker Kim Van Someren ‘s first solo show,Into Its Own Echo . Van Someren’s work describes an architecture that defies physics – the hulking, awkwardly traversing forms either lurch forward on impossibly small pins, or stand supernaturally affixed to the ground; impractically cantilevered extensions catapulting out of the frame. Art Forma   Kindness In a Glance: The Photography of Nathan Vass. Nathan Vass, popular Seattle artist, blogger and bus driver, will feature large format portraits and excerpts from some of his most moving stories. The show will feature prints Nathan personally developed at the last color darkroom in the United States, which is soon to be closed. Prairie Underground features the work of muralist of Xavier Roache, a Seattle based artist of color who is passionate about self expression through visual art and building community. Since he graduated from Alfred University in 2016, his art has been showcased across the United States and has collaborated with artists in London and Australia.

Marela Zacarias Studios Working with a labor-intensive process that merges sculpture with painting, Marela Zacarias fabricates forms out of wire screening attached to wooden supports or found objects to which she applies layers of plaster to create undulating forms. Through sanding, polishing, and painting, she creates sculptures with the quality of fabric, filled with movement and expressive quality. Mainframe will be ushering in the autumn season with new ink drawings by illustrator Socar Myles. Known for her delicate, detailed and whimsical drawings of birds, trees and fantastical beasts, Socar has been a favorite with Art Attack regulars for many years, and this new set will surely delight!

This artwork embraces abstraction through an insistent rhythm of lines that evoke the worn grooves of a vinyl record being obsessively played until the scratches make it uniquely yours. The oscillation markings are like sound-waves. They look the way punk rock feels; disruptive, fast, loud… never losing momentum.

The manmade structures, and increasingly important natural elements, are seen as if in motion, and often rendered in a near abstract gesture. Don’t miss the September 8 edition of the Georgetown Art Attack featuring colorful visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic neighborhood. Arrive early for the annual Van Haven custom van rally and  San Gennaro Italian Street Festival .

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery   Seattle cartoonist David Lasky will publish a minicomic preview of the forthcoming Georgetown Steamplant graphic novel (in collaboration with writer Mairead Case ) and discuss their approach to the project, scheduled for publication in fall of 2019. This is the first graphic novel funded by the City of Seattle’s public art program.

Interactive artist Jake Fennell will present “Reality is Mutable,” an installation employing 3-D spherical video technology and virtual reality goggles to create an immersive, surrealistic tour of the Georgetown Steamplant.

The evening includes a screening of “The Last Blast: Big Black at the Georgetown Steamplant,” which documents the legendary final show by influential Chicago industrial band Big Black on August 9, 1987, produced by Fantagraphics Bookstore curator Larry Reid. The film includes performances by Jesse Bernstein and Roland Barker .

Bridge Productions is excited to present a series of paintings by Seattle painter, printmaker, and multimedia artist Sue Danielson . This new series features work made over a period of time before, during, and after a series of residencies over the past year. For her solo exhibition, Intangible Horizon , Danielson fluctuates between the chromatic frenzied lines and layers of a city map and the verdant hues of a natural landscape.Opening Reception Saturday 8 September 6-9pm. Open Saturdays 12-7pm (Including Day Of Reception)

Marela Zacarias Studios  Working with a labor-intensive process that merges sculpture with painting, Marela Zacarias fabricates forms out of wire screening attached to wooden supports or found objects to which she applies layers of plaster to create undulating forms. Through sanding, polishing, and painting, she creates sculptures with the quality of fabric, filled with movement and expressive quality. She then paints the sculptures with original patterns and geometric abstract shapes that are inspired by her research.  Her work is characterized by an interest in site specificity, socially committed history and current events. Open to the public during Art Attack.

Mainframe   “Star Gazing: A Paul Hernandez Photography Retrospective”

Local photographer Paul Hernandez has cracked open the vault of negatives, circa 1988-1993, to exhibit a never published catalogue of rock photos from the Grunge era. With subjects such as Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Green Apple Quickstep and Alice in Chains, this hand-developed photography collection features both live images from Seattle iconic locales like Central Tavern and The Vogue, as well as band shots in studio and around urban Seattle. Paul’s friendships with many of these musicians allowed him to see them with their guards down, and the result is fun, poignant, beautiful and at times chilling. Artist Talk at 7:30 pm. Show runs through October 7th.

Prairie Underground  presents [REM]EMBER by Mia Imani Harrison . Over fifty years ago Martin had a dream, and it’s failed to fully realize. Thus, we are inviting people to go back to sleep to find it. Recently, massive demonstrations have been held in which Black folx across the globe have shown their solidarity for the unjust murders of Black people (women, men, children, and transgender) by police officers. We have seen Black bodies put forth tremendous effort to make the point that #blacklivesmatter, while serving as spectacles to the public and mass media. [REM]EMBER is a multi-media project including staged “sleep-in” with footage of the initial performance/protest, which will take place in Seattle on August 4th.
